This is September. Hot Girl Summer is over, and school is now in session. Fashion Month is here, so be sure to take notes!
This is the busiest time of the year for most fashion designers who wish to reveal their new collections (typically in New York, Paris, Milan, and London). But, in true OYE studio fashion, Lagos Fashion Week has been appointed class prefect. Throughout the next several weeks, I will be writing about some of my favorite African brands I hope to see at Lagos Fashion Week, what I love most about their work, and my predictions for their upcoming collections this year.
First up: MEENA
What I love most about Meena:
The Meena brand doesn’t have to try hard to stand out. This, to me, is the epitome of African fashion—it’s just naturally fly and effortless. Uju (Founder of Meena) keeps all focus on the garments—no fluff. Meena is all about detail…subtle detail. If you look closely at what would appear to be a simple bodycon dress, you will see pleats, and asymmetric rouching with tiny variations of “Ada” etched all over. Details, kids! It’s all in the details.
What I hope to see from Meena at LFW OR What I predict about their upcoming collection:
Every year, Uju brings something so refreshing to the runway, and it never gets old. The sequence, the color story, the mystery of the inspiration behind the collection; the layers. It’s enough to make my imagination run wild, and in all honesty, this is what fashion shows or exhibitions are supposed to do. I expect the no less of Meena this year. I’m looking forward to seemingly impossible detail, custom prints, and more mystery!
